More than 18,000 victims suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) have filed lawsuits against RoundUp weed killer’s manufacturer, Monsanto (Bayer), claiming that their cancer developed after exposure to the product. The company is alleged to have failed in warning consumers of the danger in using the herbicide, due to it containing the toxic active ingredient glyphosate.

The active chemical ingredient found in Roundup, called glyphosate, is thought to be a cancer-causing chemical. Glyphosate was labeled as a probable human carcinogen in 2015 after studies were conducted by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO). Although evidence of the link to cancer in humans was limited, the IARC revealed the chemical damaged DNA and chromosomes in human cells. Additionally, glyphosate was found to cause cancer in laboratory rats and mice.
An independent study published by the University of Washington and the University of California Berkeley in July 2010, confirmed glyphosate’s relation to cancer. Shockingly, the study disclosed that the chances of developing NHL increased by over 40 percent when exposed to RoundUp.
Additional side effects that have been associated with RoundUp include:
Three jury verdicts have been handed down within the last year, ruling against Monsanto (Bayer). The plaintiffs were all suffering from NHL, alleging their diagnoses’ to be caused by RoundUp. The California Roundup juries awarded damages that in total, exceed $2 billion.
There have been thousands of lawsuits filed against Monsanto over the last several years alleging cancers caused by Roundup. A class-action lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court due to so many potential plaintiffs. With many more individual lawsuits being filed nationwide, the Federal Court consolidated the claims into multidistrict litigation (MDL). MDL is a process in which similar cases are combined for pretrial proceedings in order to streamline litigation. The MDL cases were established in the Northern District of California and are supervised by Judge Vince Chhabria. There are an estimated 3,500 plaintiffs from throughout the country in this class action suit alone. However, there are more than 18,000 plaintiffs in total suing Monsanto.
The popularity of Roundup has exposed a large number of consumers to repeated exposures to glyphosate. Those with jobs in the agricultural and landscaping industries are at a heightened risk of being affected by the chemical. Especially people that work with crops regularly sprayed with RoundUp, such as corn, soybeans, sorghum, canola, alfalfa, sugar beets, cotton, and wheat.
