RoundUp is one of the world’s most common herbicides. Many farmers use it during food production. It often is on fruit and vegetable crops. It’s also used in Glyphosate-resistant crops such as: canola, corn, cotton, soybeans, sugar beets, and wheat.
The chemical is also commonly used in or on lawns, greenhouses, garden centers, aquatic plants, and nurseries. Because the weed killer is so popular, many people in addition to farmers come into contact with the herbicide and are put at risk. For instance, landscapers, groundskeepers, nursery or garden center employees, and people who consume food or water that is contaminated with RoundUp.
Exposure to glyphosate can occur in a number of ways:
The risk increases if the individual does not wash their hands after use and proceeds to eat or smoke. When exposure does take place, the eyes, skin, nose, and throat may get irritated. If RoundUp gets in the eyes, it could lead to mild irritation or a superficial corneal injury. When the chemical is swallowed, saliva may increase and it may burn or cause pain in the mouth and throat. Additional side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Although RoundUp has been around since the 1970s, recent studies into its active ingredient glyphosate have brought adverse health consequences to light. A research team at the University of Washington conducted a comprehensive review of existing studies and found that glyphosate exposure increases the risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) by more than 40 percent. This conclusion is in alignment with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) classification of glyphosate as a probable cause of cancer in 2015. WHO’s decision to do so came after their subdivision, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), concluded that the herbicide damages genes.
Cancer lawsuits being pursued against Monsanto are alleging a combination of the following claims:
Over 18,000 lawsuits have been filed by plaintiffs claiming that the use of RoundUp is the cause of their NHL diagnoses. So far, three jury trials have resulted in multimillion-dollar awards being granted to the victims.
