Monsanto’s (Bayer’s) RoundUp Weed Killer is the most widely used herbicide in the world. Since its inception in the 1970’s, Monsanto (Bayer) has marketed the product and its main ingredient glyphosate as safe. However, a recent publication from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has exposed a link between glyphosate and several types of cancer, but primarily non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Monsanto (Bayer) is now facing thousands of lawsuits across the country.

RoundUp contains the active ingredient, glyphosate, which works by specifically inhibiting an enzyme that is essential to plant life and growth. There are also other chemicals present in the weedkiller’s formulation, known as surfactants. These substances are there to help glyphosate work its way into the plant. Monsanto (newly purchased by Bayer) insists that glyphosate alone is harmless. However, the combination of glyphosate and surfactants can be much more hazardous to humans, as the surfactants allow more time for the chemical to be absorbed.
The following 10 counties in Iowa have had the highest use of the chemical glyphosate between 1992 and 2017:
Iowa ranks as the number one state in the country as far as glyphosate use during that 25 year period, with an estimated high of more than 150,000,000 Kg.
The individuals most at risk for developing cancer from RoundUp are individuals with workplace exposure to the herbicide. These people can include farm workers, landscapers, and employees in garden centers or nurseries, as well as regular consumers who consistently use the product. The types of crops that are routinely sprayed with RoundUp include corn, cotton, soybeans, sugar beet, and wheat. Glyphosate can enter the body by breathing RoundUp in while spraying or mixing the chemicals, through skin absorption, or also when drinking water or eating food contaminated with the chemical.
More than 10,000 people in the U.S. who believe they have developed NHL as a result of RoundUp exposure, have filed lawsuits against Monsanto (Bayer). Symptoms of NHL can include:
There have been no large mass tort settlements involving Roundup at this time. Mass torts are civil actions that have many plaintiffs involved against one or several defendant corporations. However, there have been three jury verdicts awarding more than $2 billion in damages to individuals diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after many years of using RoundUp.
