What is RoundUp and How Does it Cause Cancer?

RoundUp was introduced in 1974, and since then, the herbicide has grown into becoming the most widely used weed killer across the world in both commercial and home settings. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published its findings that glyphosate, the main ingredient in RoundUp, is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” As the product is sprayed, the chemical spreads in the air and can be inhaled or ingested through contaminated food or water.

Evidence brought forward in the first ever RoundUp cancer trial, suggests that officials at the product’s manufacturer Monsanto (Bayer), have been aware of the link to cancer for decades. The agricultural giant denies this claim, as well as continues to insist on their product’s safety, citing research to prove it. However, the Department of Justice and FDA discovered that Monsanto (Bayer) falsified the results of their research into the subject.

Most recently, a scientific analysis released in July of 2019 concluded that the connection between exposure to glyphosate and NHL increases the chance of contracting the condition by 41 percent.

What is Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

Exposure to RoundUp’s active ingredient glyphosate commonly causes a type of blood cancer called non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The disease usually affects the lymph glands, however, it can impact any organ in the body, but especially the liver, spleen, bone or bone marrow.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Painless, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin
  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Chest pain, coughing or trouble breathing
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss

Glyphosate can also potentially cause infertility, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver damage, multiple sclerosis (MS), Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), and issues with breathing.

Who is At Risk from Glyphosate Exposure in Michigan?

Individuals who run the highest risk from long-term RoundUp exposure are those that use the product daily. That may include, for example, agricultural workers, farmers, landscapers, professional gardeners, and groundskeepers. People who work with crops that are commonly treated with RoundUp are particularly in harms way, which are corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beet, and wheat. Spraying the herbicide, as well as mixing the solution, cleaning it up, or consuming contaminated food or water, can all be dangerous.
