More than 18,000 people in the U.S. are suing Monsanto (Bayer), claiming that exposure to the company’s herbicide RoundUp is the source for their development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Individuals exposed to the glyphosate-based chemical run the risk of contracting NHL by 41 percent, according to a recent study. The Dunken Law Firm is offering free case evaluations to Montana residents who believe they are suffering from an illness that may be related to the use of RoundUp. Roundup is a broad-spectrum herbicide used to kill weeds and grasses, in an effort to protect crops from damage or simply because weeds are an annoyance. Throughout the country, a multitude of crops is commonly sprayed with glyphosate-based herbicides, including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, sugar beet, and more. The higher the volume and rate of exposure to the chemical, the larger the risk to individuals who either inhale glyphosate, absorb it through their skin or consume contaminated food or water.
Before the recent scientific analysis finding that glyphosate-based herbicides increase chances of developing NHL by 41 percent, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified the chemical as a probable carcinogen to humans in 2015. In the IARC’s laboratory testing, it was discovered that glyphosate causes cancer in animals as well as genetic damage to human cells. When damage is done to DNA, it can allow cancer to form.
NHL is cancer usually affecting the lymph glands but the disease may involve any organ, particularly the liver, spleen, bone or bone marrow. Those who become diagnosed may initially complain of an enlarged lymph gland and/or weight loss, and fever or night sweats. The staging of NHL, I to IV, is based upon the number of areas where the lymph glands are enlarged and whether there is involvement of a major body organ.
The following are the top 10 counties in Montana, in terms of the amount of glyphosate used per year:
So far, three juries have convicted Monsanto, recently acquired by Bayer, of failing to warn consumers of the alleged cancer risks from Roundup. Consequently, Monsanto (Bayer) has been ordered to pay a combined $2.37 billion. Jury awards have since been reduced, yet despite that, the damages owed still exceed $180 million. Three consecutive multimillion-dollar losses for the agricultural giant bodes well for future plaintiffs. The next Monsanto RoundUp cancer case scheduled is for October 2019 in the company’s former home state of Missouri, however, the trial date is now in limbo due to court filings from lawyers on both sides.
