North Carolina RoundUp Lawsuit Attorney

The most widely used herbicide Roundup contains the active ingredient glyphosate, which has been designated as a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Homeowners, farmers, landscapers, groundskeepers, and gardeners who use Roundup are all at a high risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), or another related form of cancer. The product’s manufacturer Monsanto, now acquired by Bayer, is facing over 42,000 lawsuits in North Carolina and across the country by people who have been diagnosed with cancer due to Roundup exposure.

Why is Roundup Dangerous?

RoundUp is mainly made up of glyphosate, a chemical ingredient that was identified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in 2015 by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This means that it’s something that can cause cancer in the human body. In fact, a recent scientific analysis actually reports that the chemical increases a person’s chances of developing NHL by 41 percent.

Who is At Risk?

These findings mean that any individual who comes into contact with RoundUp is at risk, but especially people who work in the agricultural industry; as well as farmers who grow commonly sprayed crops such as corn, soybeans, sorghum, canola, alfalfa, sugar beets, cotton, and wheat. Landscapers, garden center employees, and groundskeepers are also in danger from long-term exposure.

 Monsanto’s Cover-Up

Recent Roundup litigation has revealed evidence of Monsanto’s attempts to hide their knowledge regarding their product’s threat to human safety. One of the most incriminating pieces of evidence is internal messages between Monsanto and members of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In these messages, Monsanto appears to have made efforts to work with the EPA on concealing information about the link between Roundup and cancer development.

 RoundUp Cancer Lawsuit Verdicts

Within the last year, three separate juries in California have ruled in favor of plaintiffs, ordering Monsanto (Bayer) to pay more than $2 billion in damages. Each plaintiff had been suffering from a diagnosis of NHL, alleging their diagnoses’ to be caused by RoundUp.

Johnson v. Monsanto $289M Verdict

This was the first-ever RoundUp trial and first California state trial, which began on 6/18/18 and ended on 8/10/2018. The award was later reduced to $78M.

Hardeman v. Monsanto$80M Verdict

This was the first federal trial, which began on 2/25/2019 and ended on 3/27/2019. The $80M verdict was later reduced to $25.2M.

Pilliod et al., v. Monsanto —  $2.055 Billion Verdict

The first CA JCCP trial, which began on 3/28/2019 and ended on 5/13/2019. A judge later reduced the more than $2 billion verdicts to $86.7M.

With so many individual RoundUp cancer lawsuits being filed nationwide, the Federal Court combined the federal claims into multidistrict litigation (MDL). MDL is a process used to streamline litigation for similar cases, by merging them for pretrial proceedings. These nearly 2,500 federal cases are under the supervision of Judge Vince Chhabria in the Northern District of California. However, there is a total of more than 42,000 lawsuits pending in the U.S.
