Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, has been linked to the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) and other certain types of B-Cell Lymphomas (cancer), such as:
The people who are most at risk of developing these types of cancer include individuals who work in particular garden-oriented positions, such as garden center workers, landscapers, nursery employees, and farmworkers.
Glyphosate in Roundup blocks an enzyme that plants need to survive. Not only does Roundup contain Glyphosate, but is also made up of 59% of other unnamed ingredients. These other ingredients are most commonly surfactants and one of the most common ones found in Roundup is called POEA, which is a toxic substance to aquatic animals. These types of surfactants are used to reduce surface tension between two liquids, allowing more time for plants to absorb glyphosate. The combination of POEA and glyphosate makes Roundup particularly deadly.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) convened a group of 17 experts from 11 countries to determine the potential human health dangers from glyphosate four other pesticides and herbicides. A monograph was then issued in 2015, concluding that glyphosate-based herbicides are “a probable carcinogen in humans.” Their report cites studies showing a significant increase in cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma among those in agricultural professions and people who report regular use of Roundup or other glyphosate-based weed killers. They also point to a link between glyphosate exposure and rare tumors that developed in mice as a reason they consider the chemical a probable carcinogen.
Monsanto (Bayer) faces Roundup cancer lawsuits by more than 13,400 plaintiffs across the United States, including a class action product liability lawsuit. Plaintiffs are alleging that Monsanto (Bayer) failed to warn consumers about the risk of developing cancer when using RoundUp. To date, Monsanto (Bayer) has lost three U.S. jury trials in the Roundup litigation, with juries in California granting multimillion-dollar awards. The company is appealing the decisions, however, in August the first trial outside of California is scheduled to begin. The trial is taking place in St. Louis, Missouri, where the company was originally founded.
