Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, was discovered to be and identified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015. IARC’s findings prompted thousands of lawsuits, of which the few that have made it to trial have shed light on glyphosate’s cancer-causing characteristics.
Monsanto patented glyphosate as a weed-killing agent after a chemist under their employment discovered the chemical in 1970. The company has since continued to market the herbicide they branded Roundup, as safe. Crops that are routinely sprayed worldwide include soybeans, corn, sorghum, canola, alfalfa, sugar beets, cotton, and wheat.
There are three ways that exposure to Roundup can happen:
Low-level and isolated exposures to Roundup are considered to be harmless. For example, coming into contact with weeds that have been treated with Roundup or eating Roundup Ready fruits, vegetables, and grains that were sprayed with Roundup before being picked or harvested.
However, there seems to be an increased risk of cancer, predominantly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) as well as several other health issues with constant and high-level exposures to Roundup. People who are especially at risk include:
Many of these people are exposed to large amounts of Roundup and glyphosate every day. Although general consumers typically have low-level exposures to the herbicide, consistent use on lawns or in gardens can still put them at risk.
The following counties have shown increased use of glyphosate over a 25 year period in Texas, between 1992 and 2017:
Seek medical care immediately if you experience any of the following initial symptoms of NHL:
The Roundup cancer cases that have made it to trial have resulted in million-dollar verdicts for several plaintiffs, as well as a $2 billion verdict in favor of a couple who developed NHL after using the herbicide for 30 years. In spite of recent studies and verdicts finding the company negligent on Roundup’s role in cancer development, Monsanto (Bayer) maintains the product’s safety.
Following a recent lawsuit, evidence came to light (including internal emails exchanged with the EPA) that Roundup’s manufacturer was aware that the herbicide is carcinogenic, yet failed to inform their consumers of the risks associated with long-term use.
